Brand Safety

Brand Safety vs Brand Suitability vs Ad Fraud: What's the Difference?

Three terms marketers use interchangeably — and three genuinely different problems.

By Will Harnden ·

In short: brand safety avoids harmful content, brand suitability avoids content wrong for your brand, and ad fraud is about whether a human saw the ad at all.

Brand safety, brand suitability and ad fraud get lumped together in the same breath, but they solve different problems and a strong result on one tells you nothing about the others. Here’s the clean distinction.

Brand safety — is it harmful?

Brand safety is about avoiding universally damaging contexts: your ad next to hate speech, extremism, graphic violence or illegal content. It’s a broadly agreed, industry-wide floor. Nobody wants their logo there, regardless of what they sell.

Brand suitability — is it right for us?

Suitability is narrower and personal to your brand. A knife next to a cookery article is suitable; the same knife next to a crime report is safe but unsuitable. Suitability depends on your values, category and campaign — what’s fine for one advertiser is off-limits for another.

Ad fraud — is it even a person?

Fraud is a different axis entirely. Brand safety and suitability both assume a real human is seeing the ad in some context. Ad fraud asks whether there’s a human at all — or whether the impression went to a bot, a spoofed domain or a machine-to-machine device.

Why the distinction matters

You can run a perfectly brand-safe, perfectly suitable campaign that is still 30% bot traffic — safe, appropriate, and largely unseen by humans. Safety and suitability protect your reputation; fraud protection protects your budget. You need all three, measured separately. A vendor that reports only one is leaving the other two unmeasured.

A quick way to keep them straight: brand safety is the industry’s standard, suitability is your standard, and fraud protection asks whether there’s a human for any standard to apply to at all. Budget for all three explicitly and insist each is measured on its own terms — because a clean score on one is routinely mistaken for a clean score on all three, and that quiet assumption is exactly where reputation and money leak away. The vendors worth trusting will report each axis separately and never blur them together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between brand safety and brand suitability?

Brand safety avoids universally harmful content; brand suitability avoids content that's inappropriate for your specific brand, even when it's otherwise safe.

Can a brand-safe campaign still have ad fraud?

Yes. A campaign can be perfectly safe and suitable yet still serve a large share of impressions to bots — safety and fraud are separate problems.
